"Great Place"
I have lived here for several months and I absolutely love it. I live high and the views are breathtaking. Security is great, the facilities are fantastic and it is always very clean. The gardens on both sides of the building are very well maintained and people for the most part, are friendly. The new manager Kelly is always available and is very helpful. I can't say enough great things about the building. I can say I wish I had moved in sooner, that's how much I enjoy living here.

"Beautiful Building at the
Heart of Victoria"
As the caretaker of the Astoria Since January 2011 I have enjoyed working here. The building is the best one I have worked in during my 25 years as a manager/caretaker.

"A great building "
A modern, upscale building in a very convenient location within walking distance of the harbour and downtown. Well managed by Gateway property management company who keep the building in excellent condition. Secure, clean and well maintained.

Good info and review.

I am living in this building now as the new Caretaker and love it here. It is a well maintained building and the residents are very courteous and have welcomed me into the building with open arms. Gateway manages this building well and I hope to be here for many years to come.

"Beautiful building, great
location - needs a new
property manager"
This building has a really great location. Ocean/mountain views. The only negative is that it is managed by Gateway Property Management.

What a ridiculous statement about the management company. The building is very well managed. Obviously this reviewer has never taken any interest in the management of the building and I only hope they are not owners.

As an owner at the Astoria I am more than happy to have Gateway Property manage the building. They do an excellent job of keeping the building in good shape. The reviewer statement about management is completely wrong.

The management company might be ok, but the resident caretaker is a miserable sod that doesn't seem to do much work. There is a weekend cleaner, a person to vacuum each floor, floor waxing contractor and janitorial . . . big $$$
unregistered user on October 10 2010:
An inaccurate statent aboutthe resident caretaker and the other contracted tasks. There is no separate floor waxing or janatorial contractor, the weekend cleaner is for 2 hours and the vacuum contract was short term. It is a shame that postings are not checked for accuracy.

The worst thing about this building is neither the property management nor the cleanliness. IT'S THE FIRE ALARMS. Four fire alarms this week alone (currently the alarm has been going off for 40 minutes -- firemen say they can't turn it off since they have no key and apparently no management has been available). Day or night, these false alarms will drive you MENTAL. Sure wish the Strata would address this issue...
unregistered user on January 4 2011:
The Strata did address the issue. None of the alarms were false. three were caused by wall sconce bulbs burning out and one was from a resident overheating a pot on the stove. Of course the Strata addressed the issue - it is pity there is not a crystal ball that can foretell that 3 bulbs will burn out and smoke in the same week. With over 200 sconces in the building it was an incredible coincidence. As usual the comments are incorrect but what is to be expected from narrow minded people.
unregistered user on January 30 2011:
Re: narrow minded. There has been an ongoing problem with burnt out sconce bulbs setting off the fire alarm for over 3 years.
unregistered user on January 31 2011:
What rubbish. There were a couple of incidents of the fire alarm going off early after the building opened and then this year there were a series of alarms over the period of 3 months. The idiot writing the comment on Jan 30th makes it sound like they were going off continuously which is rubbish.
unregistered user on February 4 2011:
One has only to check the Fire Department's records or, as the Astoria is fined for each false alarm, the Strata Council's expenditures for verification of on-going problem.
unregistered user on February 9 2011:
Oh! Checked the Fire Departments records. The have records of fire alarms, no false alarms and no fines have been imposed. There has been no alarm call since mid December.

It is interesting to read these reviews. I my experience you catch more flies with honey than you do with Vinegar. I am always available to assist the owners and residents of the Astoria day and night and often outside of my work hours as many can atest too. In doing so it makes for a well run and cared for buiding and the residents/owners feel like they are heard and cared for. Yes issues come up and usually are dealt with sooner than later. The wall sconce bulbs was an issue before I took over and it was addressed when that was discovered as the problem and now we have good quality bulbs and all arre replaced once a year whether they are burnt out or not. We have had only one alarm since I took over and it was due to a burnt out wire in the generator room on the motor that trickle charges the battery for the generator. Year one is under my belt now and working forward too year two.

I, for one, have to say that Kelly (the Resident Caretaker) is the absolute best thing to have happened to the Astoria. He's responsive, proactive and just down-right awesome. Hope he's here for many years to come! (And no, Kelly didn't write this!)
kellog on February 16 2012:
Thanks I appreciate the compliments. At first I thought the negative ones above were for me but realized it was the past Caretaker as I didnt start until Jan 15th 2011.
Curly on June 26 2012:
I share the views about Kelly as expressed here. He is responsible, approachable and hard-working. The negative reviews posted above seem to come from one person who must have some kind of grudge against Gateway Properties and/or Kelly. The Astoria is an efficiently run and well-maintained building in a superb location.
