"Not Quite a Nazi Camp"
I have lived here for 2 years now and while I think the above post referring to "Nazis" is a bit extreme, I agree that the building atmosphere is uptight and many residents (mainly the older ones) are whiny, nitpicky and unfriendly. I dread any dealings with the Strata. I wish I had read the above review before purchasing, it easily could be deemed as a 55+ building (I am nowhere near 55). That said, the building is more or less well maintained and the location is fantastic with the various ammenities within walking distance. But if I could go back in time and know what I know now, I would not purchase here again. A note of interest: my unit faces into the courtyard and sound travels very easily, conversations on decks or in units with windows open can easily be heard.

"Over side of the coin"
This is from an old persons (55 yrs old) perspective. I am very happy in this building. I think the neighbours are great. Walking distance to shops. -- As for some of the comments; rules are made for a reason. We wait for the Gate to close so unwanted visitors don't follow. Other buildings utilize parking passes as well. There is always going to be at least one person that will think it is there right to park there every night. It is not fair to those of us that had to buy an extra spot OR those that do park on the street. -- As for the "too loud" comments. When you live in a building with shared common space; it can be startling when you have a neighbour that slams their doors hard enough to feel it. It should not be necessary to talk loud enough to be heard several doors down the hall. -- This is OUR HOME. We respect each others privacy & quiet enjoyment.

If you bought an extra parking space, good for you, you'll get your money back in resale value, so I don't feel sorry for you. I'm sure other buildling that use parking passes have limited parking, unlike the Highgate. Why do you care so much if someone does park overnight? What does it matter to you? I believe most people who need to DO park on the street, however, it would be nice to be able to park in the visitor parking after an Ikea or Home Depot run without having to worry about being towed. It would be nice also if the snow makes it difficult to park on the street. Or maybe on Halloween night. I think a considerate neighbour might understand that. And as for living with common space, living with 100+ other people is NEVER going to be the same as living in a single detached dwelling. If you want total quiet and privacy, go live on a farm. People have to live their lives, even if means you have to turn down your hearing aid a little bit. Agreed that this is everyone's home, which means not just the cranky people's.

My wife and I purchased a suite in an "elderly" building for the simple reason; low noise and privacy. On the contrary, it was tha absolute opposite. Constant harassment re: coming/goings, lights on after 10 pm, showering after 8 pm, knocking on our door to replace their lightbulb, it just keeps on going. Bottom line here is if you want privacy and a noise free environment then consider a private dwelling. Exactly what we did, in fact we chose not to keep the suite as a rental due to further problems (strata) and purchased our dream home. So for us younger folks, beware; they appear not at face value! You pay for what you get. Oh and by the way we often have our hot tub running late in to the night with our stereo on and steaks on the BBQ!

Okay, not sure where I fit in. I am a woman over 40, living alone, and picked condo living for security. Before purchasing I took the time to get to know the neighbourhood before buying. No building is perfect. You have to pick the building/neighbourhood that fits your lifestyle. To be honest, I don't see alot of young adults getting their start in Lynn Valley. What some may find annoying I find safety in. I like being in a building where everyone is watching out for each other.

"BEWARE: Nazi Building"
I lived here for 5+ years and hated it from the very first day when someone yelled at me for not waiting for the parking gate to close completely before entering the garage. This building should have been designated as 55+ as most of the people are old and absolutely miserable. There are always nit-picky signs being posted around the building: don't slam the door so loud, don't walk down the stairs so loud, don't talk in the hallways so loud, don't leave your bike in the storage area without a "special tag", etc. The worst is the strata "patrols" of the visitor parking garage. The visitor parking is very spacious, it is rarely even 1/4 full. But there is a "parking committee" who patrol to make sure that residents don't park there. They then made a rule that visitors had to have a "parking pass" displayed on their dashboard and every unit got 2. I can understand such rules if there were only 1 or 2 spots but there are lots! What's the big deal if a resident parks an additional car there occassionally? It comes down to old, miserable people with nothing better to do with their time. There is one lady (T.G) who makes it her business to go to every open house of units for sale to "inspect". It's really too bad that residents have ruined this building, I really enjoyed my unit (although the Nazis won't allow laminate flooring), I just dreaded going in and out everyday and that's no way to live. This is an extremely stuck up, controlling and non-friendly building.

Your building describes the building I live in to a T. (only I'm in a new building in Langley) As in any neighbourhood, like attracts like. Our building is also becoming a 50+ building. It's all about Bylaws, Rules and respecting quiet enjoyment. Most older people do not like loud music. Our building also lacks structure & control as we do not have a live-in Manager/Caretaker. Rules are made up as we go. To save money, we have to volunteer our services to look after the grounds/building.

To original post: Consider yourself lucky you live in a building with people that care. Maybe you would like to live in my building. Two years ago we had a nice blend of young couples, families, singles, retirees. People are moving out to the point that it is being dominated by people that do not care. We too have ample Visitor parking. In the day time it sits empty. Evenings & weekends it's full; but it's not visitors using it. I don't care about the occasional parker. For us, it is the same cars parked there every night. (Would you want your visitors to park down the street? Our neighbourhood is resident parking only. Our visitors have to walk two blocks.) -- Also, by having people that don't care, we have seen our building age too fast. Just yesterday someone dropped their slurpee on the carpet and left it there. Our Janitor works during the week which means he won't be back until Tuesday. I had to clean it up. I'm in the process of selling my unit because why should I have to listen to my neighbour's noise all the time. If I do anything, they bang on the walls. (I have been questing from Day One why I can hear my neighbour because I live a building with a 70 STC)

I believe every building goes through a pendulum swing. (like attracts like) I live in a building that has gone in the other direction. We have problems with renters who don't care; off site management. -- Hit the Home Tab above. At the end of day; where do you really want to live?
