Rented a unit in this building

"Noise, Noise, Noise!"
Renting a unit in this building on the top floor. Quaint neighborhood. Rent is $1,400. Pet friendly. One unit recently had bed bugs but they were pro-active about it so we think we're safe. The trouble is, someone moved into the unit below us and all of a sudden it is so unpleasant! The person is heavy on their feet. Something is very wrong with this building, structurally so noise travels up and noise travels down, big time. I've talked to others in the adjacent building that have suffered through this as well. Some eventually moved away because of the noise from above. We thought we'd be spared since we're on the top floor. Guess we were wrong! :(

I have a similar problem in a newer construction. Something is very wrong between floors. I live on the top floor and glad I do, because I can hear the people below. I feel for the person under them. (I can hear them talking, walking around, slamming doors, playing loud music, when they watch movies it sounds like we're in a theatre) They are also the type of people that can dish it out, but can't take it because they bang on the ceiling all the time. In addition our building does not have a live-in Manager so there is no one to complain to when you want your neighbour to lower the volume after 10PM.
There should be some means of getting people to be a little more respectful or at least comply to the rules a little better. I should think that by fining the repeat offenders, the rental agency or strata could actually start to churn out a profit! That would be a win-win. A quieter building with a higher contingency fund. What could be better? ;) These fines might even offset the cost of a nightly manager! :) I think the city should do the same with aggressive drivers. Fine them. Win win for the city. Safer streets and more $ to maintain them!
Great idea, BUT if you are in a building with poor construction everything your neighbour does is noise. I don't consider myself a noisy person but the neighbour under me bangs on the ceiling all the time. (I would have to stop living to get quieter) Management, I think, needs to listen to complaints. My neighbour has a Sound System that is too powerful for condo living.
If we are in a newer contruction, maybe we should be going after the builder. I am in a building that should have a 60 STC. (we hear too much)
Sure, it's not a concrete building, but come on, it's not that noisy. The condos that face the courtyard are actually very quiet because you can't hear the traffic or the binners - unlike most West End apartments.
For the most part it is quiet; BUT it is the people that make it quiet. All it takes is one or two bad seeds to make it unpleasant. I have lived in apartment buildings for 30 years and have become accustomed to living a quiet lifestyle. There can be people that should NEVER live in a condo. We have the same problem as the first comment above. One of Four of our neighbours can dish out the noise but can't take it.
1080 broughton complex is noisy, have stayed with a friend on and off when visiting town, seems like no insulation or sound proofing done on the ceilings or floors above. typical built cheap, overpriced in my opinion. you can hear people walking on the concourse and talking in the courtyard. people walk thinking their noise doesnt travel even through sinle pane glass, its just CONDO living. if you dont like it you can always move to an older building that is better built. a friend of a friend, i have to say their place is kept very clean and so far bug free for them.
